Workplace Wellness: Mental Health First Aid

Updated: Apr 19, 2023

You may be hearing about the importance of mental health a lot in the media recently. Promoting a culture of mental well-being has become imperative for most organizations. And for good reason! Recent estimates by the World Health Organization (WHO) speculate that around 15% of adults of working age suffer from a mental disorder. The WHO also highlighted that the workplace is a key actionable location for improvement in mental health in a 2022 report.

It may seem like mental health crises are occurring faster than the industry can keep up, especially post-pandemic. However, there are important changes that can be made to aid your employees in dealing with their everyday external stressors. Having supervisors or team leaders trained in mental health first aid can make a sizeable difference in cultivating a culture of caring in the workplace.

The main purpose of mental health first aid is to assist individuals who are having a mental health crisis like a panic attack, severe depressive episode, or acute anger and/or aggression. Research by Mental Health First Aid suggests that courses in mental health first aid can increase mental health literacy, self-advocacy, and empathy towards others while reducing mental health stigma. These are just a few of the many benefits that staff training in mental health could provide to your company!

Wellness Workdays is proud to announce that we will be offering our very own Mental Health First Aid course coming soon! Be sure to follow us on social media (LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter) to be the first to know!
