Mental Health First Aid

What is Mental Health First Aid?

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is skills-based training that teaches people how to identify, understand and respond to signs and symptoms of a mental health or substance use challenge. Just as CPR helps you assist an individual having a heart attack, Mental Health First Aid helps you assist someone experiencing a mental health or substance use-related crisis. In the Mental Health First Aid course, you learn risk factors and warning signs for mental health and addiction concerns, strategies for how to help someone in both crisis and non-crisis situations, and where to turn for help.

Mental Health First Aid

In the Workplace

Mental Health First Aid at Work can be the cornerstone in creating a mentally healthy workplace – one in which individuals feel valued, supported, and respected.

Nearly half of all U.S. adults will experience a mental illness at some point in their life. Each year, that’s about one in five U.S. adults.

In the United States, only 41% of the people who had a mental disorder in the past year received professional health care or other services.

Up to 200 million workdays are lost to mental health challenges.

Despite the numbers, fewer than 10% of employees feel like their workplace is free of stigmas surrounding mental health — a perception that can discourage them from asking for help.

Studies show that individuals trained in the program...

  • Increase their knowledge of signs, symptoms and risk factors of mental health and substance use challenges.

  • Can identify multiple types of professional and self-help resources for individuals with a mental health or substance use challenge.

  • Show reduced stigma and increased empathy toward individuals with mental health challenges.

  • Increase their confidence and likelihood to help an individual in distress.

  • Use the skills and information they learn in MHFA to manage their own mental wellbeing.

Testimonials from Participants

“Mental Health First Aid is like CPR for the mind. It equips you with the knowledge and skills to provide initial support to someone experiencing a mental health challenge. Just as we help those with physical injuries, we can also lend a hand to those facing mental health difficulties, guiding them toward hope and recovery,” says Sarah Royle, Wellness Workdays Mental Health First Aid Instructor. “As an instructor in Mental Health First Aid, my mission is to empower everyone with the understanding and tools to make a real difference in the lives of those struggling with mental health issues. Together, we will break down the barriers of stigma while fostering a community that values compassion, empathy, and active support for one another's well-being.”
