Drink Up

keep water near you during the day

Water has zero calories, is sugar free and contains no caffeine. But it is far from a boring drink choice. Water is an essential nutrient to our body, and all of our body’s functions depend on it. In fact, about 60 percent of our body weight is made up of water. Just a few of water’s many responsibilities include regulating body temperature, maintaining blood volume and lubricating joints and tissues. Water is also important in regulating gastrointestinal (GI) function.

How much water do you need? The standard recommendation is to drink eight cups of water every day. However, your individual water needs will vary. Factors such as your age, gender, weight, climate and activity level all play a role in what your body needs to maintain a normal hydration status. You are continuously losing fluids throughout the day and it is important to replenish those fluids. Be aware of hot temperatures or physical activity that may increase your normal fluid needs.

One easy way to make sure you are hydrating is to always have your water bottle with you. If you leave it on your desk or on your counter, it is easy to grab a sip no matter how busy you are. Another great tip is to focus on eating the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables. These foods have many great health benefits, including high water content.

Bottom line: Always listen to your body’s natural cues to stay hydrated. Make it easy for yourself by having water handy -- your body will thank you!
