5 Tips to Get Moving This Summer

Summer is here and the best part of the season is the longer days, which means more time to enjoy the outdoors and be more active. But if the sunshine and warmer weather are not enough to get you motivated to get outside, here is a list of tips to help you have a healthy and active summer.

Get Your Gear Ready It’s time to get your gear out of the closet and dust off your running shoes. Consider keeping your active gear near the door or somewhere you can easily access to help remind and motivate you to get outside. Try pumping up your bike tires and keeping it where you can see it – your porch or deck. Lay out your yoga mat in your living room to remind yourself to stretch. Simply picking out your favorite workout outfit the night before or a smart phone arm cuff will help prepare you for a morning run. Always bring a water bottle with you to stay hydrated.

Different Modes of Transportation If you live in the city, you know how traffic can be and how crowded it can get with tourists, especially during the summer season. Instead of driving, why not get around by biking, skateboarding or roller skating? It will keep you moving and get you where you want to be.

Be Tech Savvy These days everyone seems to have a smart phone or smart watch. Take advantage of those gadgets and download some fitness apps to get you moving. There are numerous options -- from running trackers, yoga sessions and strength training courses -- you name it. If you’re the competitive type, try challenging your friends on apps that allow you to view their progress.

Sign Up for a New Activity Take the opportunity to join a hiking group, sign up for a surf club or connect with a local running group. Check out Meetup.com to find what works best for you. Whatever it may be, group activities will motivate you and help you develop new relationships with people you never thought you could meet. Getting your daily dose of physical activity and socializing is a win-win.

Choose an Action-Packed Vacation If your vacations revolve around indulging at your favorite restaurants or sleeping in, it might be time to reconsider where you vacation next. Try planning a trip where you know there will be action-packed activities during your stay. Find a destination that you can explore by walking around. Plan on being near water to kayak, swim or surf. If you enjoy the mountains and the great outdoors, schedule a hiking voyage. You could even end your hike at a campground where you can pitch your own tent.

Summer will be over before you know it. Don’t miss the opportunity to enjoy the sunshine and improve your fitness goals. Start with a plan and go from there. Be sure to have fun while you’re at it.
