Stay Active this Autumn

active autumn outdoor fun

For many of us, there are endless excuses not to exercise. In the summer, it’s too hot and muggy; in the winter it’s too cold and damp. The fall is a great time to get outdoors and stay active with the beautiful scenery of leaves changing to red, orange and yellow. The air has a slight nip of cold to it, enough to cool you down but not too cold. Whether you’re just starting to exercise or you’re already in a groove but looking for new ways to sweat, the fall has plenty to offer.

• Pick your own apples. Not only will you get some steps in but carrying the heavy bag of apples around the orchard is a great way to work your arms. Apple picking is a perfect way to get the whole family moving.

• Go for a hike. Hiking can fit many levels of exercise. If you’re up for a challenge, look for trails with an incline to work your thighs, lower back and core.

• Clean up the yard. This is another great family activity. Raking up all of those beautifully colored leaves is a sure way to make you break a sweat. Have the little ones make a scarecrow by stuffing some leaves into an old pair of overalls with a flannel shirt and a pumpkin for a head.

• Make your way through a corn maze. This is another great way to get some steps in while enjoying the fall festivities. Kick the corn maze up a notch by seeing how quickly you can run through to the end.

Bottom Line: Just because summer is over doesn’t mean it’s the end of outdoor activities. There are plenty of fun ways to get some movement in and enjoy fall with family and friends.
