Sustainable Eating

Sustainable food

Sustainability is a buzzword in the health and wellness industry, but what does it really mean?

Sustainability is based on the consideration of how your choices affect your health as well as the health of the community, environment and the production of food. Choosing food that was sustainably produced helps conserve natural resources while minimally impacting the environment.

Shopping locally is a great way to eat seasonally and support your community. Buying from local farmers supports small businesses and helps the local economy thrive. Eating what is in season where you live ensures that the food has the highest nutritional content and that it didn’t travel thousands of miles to get to your supermarket.

Another easy strategy for sustainable living is to make changes within your own home. For example, when you use a refillable water bottle, there is no need to buy plastic water bottles. This small change will save you money and reduce plastic waste. Growing a small garden at home is also a great money-saving, sustainable practice. Whether it’s herbs in a pot or tomatoes in your backyard, a small garden can provide abundant produce and give you more appreciation for where your food comes from.

Considering the declining condition of the environment, as well as the increase of factory farming and agribusiness, the sustainability trend is becoming increasingly important. Making minor changes and prioritizing sustainable practices can improve the health and well-being of the community and of the planet.
